TERJEMAHAN PANTUN KE BAHASA INGGERIS OLEH MUHAMMAD HAJI SALLEH

Kalau tuan menari *legung,
          Jangan menari di tepi pagar;
Kalau tuan duduk termenung,
          Jangan lupa mengenang sekitar.

If *legung you’d go a-dancing,
          Dance not by the embankment;
If you sit alone reminiscing,
          Forget not the charming environment.

Ambil buluh dihiris-hiris,
          Hiris mari di Pulau Serindip;
Bateri computer sudahlah habis,
          Layar tergetar, berkelip-kelip.

Fetch the bamboo and cut it slow,
          Cut it well on the Isle of Serindip;
My battery is indeed weak, it’s low,
          It shrieks a warning, beep, beep, beep.

Ambil benang disambung-sambung,
          Buat menangkap ikan bilis;
Saku kita semakin kembung,
          Otak kita semakin kempis.

Take the net, thread it smaller,
          The anchovies we must catch to fry;
Our purses get much fatter,
          But our hearts continue to shrink dry.
